Last week on July 14th 2016 I moved to New York City. On July 13th I left home, a town outside Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and after traveling for nearly 26 hours I arrived at my apartment in the Big Apple. So far it has not been easy, because I am dealing with some serious home-sickness. I created this blog to try to stay connected to my friends and family back home. On this blog, I will try to keep you updated on my life in New York.
Moving is never easy, but it has been a lot harder than I had every imagined. At just 18-years-old I decided to take a huge step and move across the Atlantic Ocean to live on my own for the first time. I have never been without my family for more than 10 days, I think. In the past, I have been on summer camps, but those were never longer than a week and you were surrounded by other people. Now I am not only away from my family, but I am also on my own. Even though it is hard, it has always been a dream of mine to live in New York for a few months by myself. At this moment I am literally living my dream and I am going to make the most of it.
To realize my dream I enrolled at the New York Language Center (NYLC) to improve my English and to prepare for the TOEFL exam. I will be studying there for 12 weeks and today was actually my first day. In total, I will be staying in New York City for 4 months. I need to improve my English, because I really want to go to Amsterdam University College (AUC) in the fall of 2017. My grade in English on my high school diploma is not high enough to meet their English requirements. To increase my chances of getting accepted, I had to improve my English, which is why I enrolled at NYLC. AUC suggested that I take the TOEFL exam to show my improvement. So now I am living New York AND increasing my chances of getting into AUC.
Well, now you know a little about me and why I moved to New York. Sometimes I will post more frequently than other times and sometimes my post are more exciting than other times, but it is all part of my life.
I hope to see you around!
